Before the fall, when they wrote it on the wall
I was in northern Spain recently and the subject of where we should go the following day came up. Someone suggested the caves of Altamira (which I had vaguely assumed to be in France). 'Yes let's go there!' I cried, more enthusiastically than might be expected. Two more of the over 30s also perked up and said they'd always wanted to see these caves. When asked what the big deal was, we mumbled something about history, cave paintings and erm... well, The Caves of Altamira is a track on a Steely Dan album. It turned out all three of us all had this album (The Royal Scam), much to the horror of all those under 30. This track also precognitively namechecks The Fall, according to me, thus linking the two greatest bands of all time, according to me. And after all, there's nobody else here.
A few days later, back home, I was browsing through some mp3 collections and spotted Bjork's first album, the one she made in 1977 when she was 11 or something. Track one is called Alta Mira so I downloaded it. It's a charming tune and I've played it several times.
We never did see the caves.
